MID-TERM EXAM REVIEW QUESTIONS:

Review the models of foreign policy decision-making and the major theories of international relations, e.g. realism, idealism, complex interdependence, etc.

Review the evolution of the post-WWII and post-Cold War international systems.  What are the major features of each in terms of the structure of international relations and power distribution?  Why do we classify the post-Cold War system as unipolar?  What is a hegemonic power?  What are bipolar, multipolar, unipolar or bipolycentric systems? (review you class notes)

Discuss the role of the executive/president in the foreign policy process?  What resources and powers does the executive have in the FP process?   What is the difference between the executive as the individual and the executive as an office? 

 What are some of the individual characteristics of the executive that may influence foreign policy?  What are some of  the personality pro-types discussed in class?  Why do they make a difference?

Discuss the style and major foreign-policy achievements of three executives discussed in class?  What is your assessment of the Bush administration, so far?

 What factors related to the office impact foreign policy?

What are the powers of Congress in the foreign policy process?  What role has Congress come to play in relation to the executive since the end of WWII?  Has the end of the Cold War made a difference?  

What is the relationship between Congress and the executive?

What powers has Congress delegated to the Presidency?  What are the legislative tools used to delegate power--War Powers Act, Fast Track, etc.?  What is a concurrent resolution/legislative veto vs. joint resolution?  Why are they significant?

Discuss the role of the bureaucracy.  What are the major FP bureaucracies?  What powers do bureaucracies have in the FP process?

Discuss the role of public opinion, interest groups and the media.  Find example of FP interest groups.

What is the iron triangle and why is it important to the FP process?

Review questions on pages 103 and 145 in the Annual Edition 02/03.

FINAL EXAM REVIEW QUESTIONS:

Review the model(s) and variables impacting the development of AFP.

Be prepared to write an essay identifying the major variables involved in your AFP case study.  Be prepared to specifically discuss any one or two variables, i.e. the executive, congress, interest groups, external factors, key bureaucratic actors, etc.  Your answers should include specific examples.

Be prepared to identify the values, interests, and relationship between the two in your case study. (especially review Jentleson, chapter 1)

Be prepared to discuss the development of American trade policy. 

Be prepared to discuss the relationship between the development of trade policy and national security policy.  (Jentleson chapters 8-9)

Be prepared to discuss the development of American national security policy.  Be prepared to discuss the meaning and impact of specific administration doctrines--Monroe, Truman, Nixon/Kissinger doctrine, etc.

(Review readings and notes before and up to mid-term)

Be prepared to discuss the historical phases of AFP, as discussed in the reading and in class.  Be prepared to identify key foreign policy cases that demonstrate the elements of the major historical phases.  For example, do you see the relationship between the Monroe doctrine and the era of US isolationism vis-a-vis Europe, but Imperialism vis-a-vis Latin America and the Caribbean?  (Jentleson chapters. 3-5)

Be prepared an essay on your views of the future of AFP.  Such an essay should be based upon more than opinion or your feelings, but should demonstrate your understanding of the facts of AFP history, decision-making, values and goals. (Jentleson, ch 10 and lecture notes).
