This course is a survey of the 20th century political institutional, ideological, economic, social, and cultural factors affecting the politics and governance of Latin American nation-states. The course focuses on the key issues and events that are crucial to understanding the development of the modern-day American political development. A range of issues, are covered including, the relationship of Latin America and the United States; the historical roots of political institutions, coalitions, and domestic political tensions; national economics of the Americas; political instability, reform movements and revolutions; the impact of migration and urbanization; changing regional ethnic identities; religion and political change; revolutionary movements; democratization, liberal market reforms, and difficulties in maintaining national sovereignty and institutional stability.
