Discuss different schools of thought influencing the analysis of international relations.

Discuss the various levels of analysis.

Discuss the relationship between the major actors involved in international relations.

What are the competing views about the actors involved in the international system?

Discuss the concept of power in the international system?  What are the different forms of power exerted by the differing actors?

Discuss the evolution of the international economic system.  What is managed trade?  Why is the concept of the "free market" difficult to achieve in an international system?

What is the relationship between power and trade?  How do nations use trade to achieve international economic goals?

Discuss the importance of understanding the foreign policy processes of nation-state actors.

What are the instruments of international economic power?  What are examples of how they are used?

What is globalization?  What are the competing pro and con arguments about globalization?  How are the different actors in the international system impacted by globalization?

Discuss the trade and monetary policy issues that impact the international system.

What are the major economic issues impacting relations between North and South?  How has the end of the Cold War impacted relations between nations of the former Soviet Bloc and the West?  How does the integration of the those nations into the international economic system impact international relations?  What about China?

What are the major international actors influencing international political economy?

Discuss the major populations, demographic, and environmental issues affected by international development and the spread of the market--market liberalization.

Review your topics for the in-class presentation. What are the main points about international relations demonstrated in your presentation? What do you learn about the international system from the investigation of your topic? You should have at least three major points? How do these points relate to some of the points of theory or concepts about IR made by K&W in their book?

What are the major theories about the causes of war in the international system? How has armed conflict changed in the world? What have nuclear weapons done to alter our understanding of war and international security?

What are the three levels of analysis used to understand armed conflict in the international system? Discuss those levels.

Discuss the causes and forms of civil war? What is the relationship between civil war and international conflict? Discuss terrorism in the international system?

What is the relationship between economic security and military power?

What are the elements to state power? How do nations measure and pursue military power?

Discuss some of the trends in weapons technology and the spread of weapons of mass destruction? How has the structure of the international system impacted national acquisition of weapons of mass destruction--end of the bipolar CW world, for example?

Discuss, compare and contrast the Realist/military and Idealist/diplomatic paths to peace ?

What are alliance and balance of power systems? What are the flaws in both?

What are the Political integrationist paths to peace? How do they differ?

What are the flaws in international law?

What are major dilemmas facing the future of international relations? In Chapter 17, K&W address 10 questions about the future, discuss five of those ten that you feel are the most important.
