P. S. 330: American Parties
   and Interest Groups
Dr. Triebwasser
Fall 2002

COURSE OUTLINE

This course deals with inputs to the political system.  As such, it examines the functioning of political parties, interest groups, campaigns, political finance, the media, lobbying, and political culture within the general perspective of American politics--both public and private.

We will be covering the readings in the course in the following order:

  1. Party Politics in America.
  2. The Idea of a Party System.
  3. The Interest Group Society.
  4. News: The Politics of Illusion.
In addition to these four books, for which all students in the class will be responsible, each student shall choose a candidate for a local, state, or Congressional race; follow the progress of the campaign through interviews, field work, newspaper articles, and television stories; and submit a paper on the campaign of ten typed pages. In addition to covering the campaign, the term paper should link the campaign with the general concepts learned from the texts, lectures, and class discussions throughout the course. The student will also keep a journal of all field work, interviews, relevant telephone calls, etc. and submit this with the term paper.  In certain instances, a student--with the prior permission of the instructor--may substitute a term paper using books from the attached Book List. Some students will also be selected to make an oral presentation based on their term paper topic.

In addition to the term paper and possible class presentations , students will be judged on class participation and on a midterm and a final. Should class participation become particularly slack, unannounced quizzes may be given.
